What are Digestive Disorders?
The digestive system stretches from the anus to the mouth and is responsible for receiving food, breaking it down into nutrients, or digesting it, absorbing the nutrients into the blood stream, and eliminating the indigestible portions of the food from the body. The digestive system organs, which include the mouth, esophagus, throat, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, anus, rectum, gallbladder, pancreas, and the liver, also produce hormones, blood clotting factors, helps remove toxic substances from the blood, and metabolizes medications. Inflammation or irritation of the various sections of the digestive tract causes digestive problems, such as dysfunction, discomfort, and disease, also known as digestive disorders.
Common Symptoms of Digestive Disorders
There are various types of digestive disorders, whose conditions may range from mild to serious. Some of the most common digestive disorders include:
Heartburn, GERD, and Acid Reflux - Heartburn and acid reflux occur when stomach acids go back up into the esophagus, generally causing burning or pain in the chest. GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a more frequent form of heartburn, which can damage the esophagus. Common symptoms of heartburn and GERD include:
Constipation - Constipation, or chronic constipation, occurs as a result of the colon being unable to pass or move stools through the rest of the GI tract. Some common symptoms of constipation include:
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a functional gut disorder that causes recurring stomach pain, constipation, or diarrhea but with no damage to the GI tract. Some of the most common symptoms of IBS include:
Gallbladder Disease - Any problem that affects your gallbladder is called gallbladder disease, including inflammation, gallstones, bile duct stones, and abscess of the gallbladder. Symptoms of gallbladder disease tend to come and go and can include:
Common Causes of Digestive Disorders
Food allergies and food intolerance are sometimes the culprits behind GI tract problems. The discomfort, malfunction, and disease of the GI tract is often a result of local immune responses to certain foods or combinations of food. Foods rich in high-fat meats, dairy, too much protein, too many processed foods, and too many refined carbohydrates can also trigger digestive problems because the digestive system becomes stressed from overwork. In addition, diets low in vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, and phyto-nutrients have also been known to cause digestive problems.
Dehydration can also trigger digestive problems. Every function of the body depends on water in order to function properly. Proper daily hydration also keeps the immune system functioning properly. Urinary incontinence is also often a result of unintentional dehydration. When the intestinal bacteria is out of balance, it can also cause digestive problems. When there is an overgrowth of pathological, or bad, bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, it can make you sick, and nothing you do will make you feel better until you correct the imbalance. Negative stress factors can also cause digestive problems because it puts extra strain on your body, which can cause both your digestive and immune system to become overworked.
More than 90 million Americans suffer from some form of digestive disorder. With so many hidden toxins in our everyday lives, from the chemicals in our water, to the processed foods we consume, and even the air we breathe, it's no wonder our bodies are in contempt. Our bodies were meant to thrive on nutritious, whole foods that nurture and support our body's natural ability to both heal and maintain itself. When this delicate balance is interrupted, it opens the door for many illnesses, including digestive disorders.
Nutrition Response Testing is a safe, natural science that works with your body's inherent need to repair itself. Using advanced reflex testing, phase one of Nutrition Response Testing, I will identify weak, or imbalanced, areas in your body that are causing your digestive issues, then arrange, in detail, gradual diet planning, and possibly whole food supplements to help ease your digestive system.
Left untreated, digestive disorders can lead to more severe illnesses, depending on the disease. Inflammation, left untreated, can damage your organs and make them unable to function properly, while constant diarrhea or vomiting, more symptoms of digestive disorders, can lead to malnutrition and dehydration because your body is unable to absorb nutrients from the food you consume. Reflux, another common symptom of digestive disorders, can damage the tissue lining of the esophagus and sometimes lead to Barrett's esophagus, a condition that causes precancerous cells in the esophagus.
